Violence Against Relief Workers Cripples DRC’s Ebola Fight

Beni: Community resistance and armed violence in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo have severely hindered response teams battling a deadly virus, with six Red Cross workers injured last week in coordinated attacks across Ituri, Haut-Uele, and North Kivu provinces.

The latest assaults bring the total number of injured volunteers to 12 across 11 separate violent incidents since the outbreak was officially declared on 15 May. Emergency personnel face persistent friction during safe burial protocols, further complicating containment efforts in conflict-heavy zones.

The outbreak has claimed 2,557 lives from 5,375 reported cases to date, largely driven by the vaccine-resistant Bundibugyo strain.
