New York: The United States has introduced a draft resolution to the United Nations Security Council proposing a nationwide expansion of the arms embargo on Sudan, warning that external military support risks drawing neighboring regional actors deeper into the conflict.

Speaking at a Security Council briefing, US envoy Massad Boulos outlined the draft resolution, which seeks to extend the existing two-decade-old restrictions beyond the Darfur region to encompass the entire territory of Sudan before the current mandate expires on 12 September. The proposal explicitly includes unmanned aerial vehicles and drone technologies within the embargo while seeking an increase in monitoring experts to track illicit weapons flows. The initiative comes amidst intensifying warfare between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions.

The proposal faces opposition within the Security Council, with veto-holding Russia expressing skepticism that expanding restrictions across the country could impair the Sudanese army's operational capabilities. Sudan’s permanent representative to the UN, Al-Harith Idriss, called instead for a simple technical extension of the existing Darfur embargo, warning that broader sanctions could weaken state forces and leave civilians unprotected.
