Washington DC: The Trump administration has notified Congress of its intent to allocate $725 million to the United Nations regular budget, moving to address a portion of its outstanding dues.
The planned transfer, detailed in an August 4 State Department letter, represents the largest single payment to the global body during the current administration. Experts noted the step comes ahead of President Donald Trump’s planned address to the UN General Assembly next month.
While aid observers welcomed the notification, US officials emphasized that funds remain contingent on ongoing institutional reforms. The State Department highlighted recent cost-cutting measures, asserting that the administration has secured historic budget reductions across international operations.
The $725 million payment covers under 20 percent of the more than $4 billion the UN states Washington owes in mandatory regular and peacekeeping contributions. UN Secretary-General António Guterres previously warned member states of potential financial collapse without timely payments.
Financial experts indicate the funding injection will cover operational costs and salaries through the year. However, failure to resolve remaining arrears could imperil long-term UN operations and voting rights.
