Washington: The United States has imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods after last-minute trade talks between the two countries failed to produce an agreement.

The tariffs, which took effect on Saturday, affect around 5% of Canada’s exports to the US and add to existing duties on sectors including steel, lumber and automobiles.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa had suspended further trade negotiations and would respond with “dollar for dollar” retaliation. The US accused Canada of declining to finalise a deal that had been under discussion.

The breakdown is expected to further strain relations between the two allies and could complicate efforts to renegotiate the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement.
