Palau: Leaders of the world's biggest economies should visit a Pacific atoll to see the effects of historic sea-level rise directly, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed said on Monday.
Speaking in Palau, Mohammed stated that rising seas in the Pacific were another result of the warming climate, which is hastening ice melt and adding water to the oceans. She asked G20 leaders to convene in Tuvalu in October and engage directly with Pacific states before the UN climate summit in Turkey.
According to a UN assessment released on Monday, warmer oceans and melting glaciers are causing global sea levels to rise at a historic pace. Up to 1.2 billion people might be displaced by 2050, according to the warning, and Pacific island nations are seeing sea level rise at a rate that is about twice the global average.
