Geneva: UN human rights chief Volker Türk said on Monday he was "horrified" by allegations that Russia's fully autonomous drones had murdered three Ukrainians, warning of the growing risk of weapons capable of killing people without human intervention.

Türk, speaking before the United Nations Human Rights Council, urged the immediate prohibition of autonomous weaponry, popularly known as "killer robots". According to accounts, a Russian AI-guided drone murdered three civilians in Zaporizhzhia in July after selecting its own target.

The UN chief also mentioned rumours that Ukraine had field tested comparable weaponry. His warning comes as countries debate international standards for autonomous weapons, with negotiations on a potential treaty set to resume later this year.
