London, United Kingdom: Former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced he is resigning from parliament after 11 years to focus on international affairs, triggering a London by-election. Starmer confirmed he is stepping down as the MP for the Holborn and St Pancras seat.

In a statement on social media, Starmer said it was the right time to step aside. He explained that he intends to focus on issues including defence, security, trade, and technology in a fast-changing world.

The decision was reported after Starmer informed the Labour party of his exit. He served 11 years as a lawmaker, spending six of those as leader of the party.

Starmer stepped down as prime minister in July amid piling pressure from fellow Labour MPs. Andy Burnham was parachuted into the prime minister role to replace him following a tumultuous two years in power.

Though credited with reviving the centre-left Labour party and securing a landslide election victory in 2024, the former human rights lawyer became deeply unpopular while in office after multiple missteps.
