Two sisters have had four-year prison sentences upheld by the Court of Cassation after being convicted of laundering more than BD21,000 linked to the purchase and sale of 77 mobile phones using stolen credit card details.

The case came to light after an electronics retailer noticed suspicious transactions in which phones were paid for from an Arab country but delivered to people in Bahrain. Investigations traced the deliveries to the sisters, who allegedly received and sold the phones before transferring proceeds to a man abroad.

Financial investigations found that more than BD21,000 was transferred through exchange houses and other individuals to conceal the source of the money. The first defendant, who remains at large, was separately sentenced in absentia to six years in prison and a BD100,000 fine.
