Two Screeners Injured After Passenger’s Gun Goes Off at India’s Varanasi Airport

Varanasi: Two airport screening staff were injured after a passenger’s licensed pistol accidentally discharged during a mandatory weapons check at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport on Sunday, August 16.

The passenger, identified as Kamlesh Kedarnath Rai from Azamgarh, was travelling with his wife to Mumbai on an Air India Express flight. He had declared the 7.62 mm pistol and ammunition for inspection. During the screening, a round was discharged and ricocheted, injuring screeners Rohit Raj and Suman Kumari.

Both were taken to hospital and are reported to be out of danger. Police have registered a case, while the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the discharge and whether safety procedures were followed.
