Washington: US President Donald Trump has said he expects the war with Iran to continue until after the November midterm elections, while predicting oil prices will fall once the conflict ends.

Trump said Iran would be unable to sustain the war beyond the elections and claimed Tehran was trying to influence the vote. He provided no evidence for the claim, while Iran has repeatedly denied seeking nuclear weapons.

His comments came as Republican pressure grows to end the seven-month conflict, which has pushed up fuel and other prices and contributed to a decline in Trump’s approval ratings.

Oil prices reached $100 a barrel on Wednesday for the first time since July as fighting intensified across the Middle East. US diesel prices have also reached a record high, raising concerns about wider inflation.

The conflict has escalated with attacks on oil tankers and energy facilities. The US military said it struck five oil tankers linked to Iran, while Iranian state media reported attacks on two US Navy destroyers and eight oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, Iran-linked Houthis launched attacks on Saudi Arabia, causing fires at oil facilities.

The US midterm elections are due on 3 November, with Republicans facing the possibility of losing control of Congress. Trump said further negotiations with Iran were possible but not currently being pursued.
