Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump has asked the Smithsonian Institution to install two big statues of George Washington and create a major exhibition honouring the first U.S. president, as part of his broader push to reshape the presentation of American history at the institution.

Trump wants an 11-foot statue of Washington installed inside the National Museum of American History by Constitution Day on September 17. He also proposes replacing the museum's outside ‘Infinity’ sculpture with a 30-foot statue of Washington.

The president also announced a five-year exhibition named ‘George Washington: His Life and Legacy,’ which will run until February 22, 2032, the 300th anniversary of Washington's birth.

The recommendations follow Trump's complaint that Smithsonian institutions have placed too much focus on issues such as racial injustice and oppression, while failing to adequately celebrate the country's founders and triumphs. The government has pressed the Smithsonian to change the way American history is presented in its museums.
