London: Two people suffered severe injuries after a Southern Rail passenger train derailed near Lewes in East Sussex, southeast England, on Thursday afternoon.

The train, which was heading from London Victoria to Eastbourne, contained approximately 150 passengers when it went off the tracks at 3:44pm local time. Three carriages overturned, leaving several passengers trapped inside.

Emergency services called a major crisis and started a massive rescue operation that included police, firefighters, paramedics, and air ambulances. All passengers were successfully evacuated, and injured passengers received medical attention on the scene and transported to hospitals.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. Officials are also investigating whether southern England's excessive heat contributed to the railway track problems.
