Bern: Switzerland has announced plans to establish a dedicated military drone battalion by 2028, reflecting a broader trend of rearmament and technological modernization across Europe.

The Swiss Federal Department of Defence confirmed that the new unit will focus on reconnaissance, operations, and defensive measures. As part of this strategic initiative, the landlocked Alpine nation will launch a specialized recruitment and training framework alongside a joint civilian-military centre for drones and robotics. The hub is designed to rapidly develop, test, and integrate advanced unmanned aerial technologies and artificial intelligence into Swiss defence systems.

The decision comes in response to a growing number of unauthorized drone flights detected over Swiss military facilities and critical national infrastructure. While Switzerland maintains its centuries-old policy of armed neutrality and mandatory male conscription, defence officials highlighted that counter-drone capabilities and robotics have now become a strategic priority to safeguard national sovereignty.
