Seoul: North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles from the Wonsan area toward the East Sea early Saturday, according to the South Korean military.

The rockets travelled approximately 250 kilometres (155 miles) before falling in the sea. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff stated they were actively watching the situation and collaborating with the US and Japan to investigate the launches.

The missile launches occurred just one day after South Korea, the United States, and Japan concluded a five-day joint military drill. Pyongyang has consistently condemned such drills, describing them as preparations for military action against North Korea.

South Korea's presidential National Security Office convened an emergency security meeting following the launches, describing them as a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.

The new launches represent yet another escalation in tensions on the Korean Peninsula, as North Korea continues to develop and test its ballistic missile capabilities.
