US, Denmark and Greenland to sign Arctic security deal
The agreement is expected to strengthen US and NATO security arrangements in Greenland while reaffirming Danish sovereignty and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.
New York: The United States, Denmark and Greenland will sign a new security agreement for Greenland on Tuesday during the UN General Assembly in New York, Denmark’s government said.
US President Donald Trump has described the deal as giving Washington “permanent control” over Greenland’s security, while Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said the agreement recognises Denmark’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.
Frederiksen, Trump and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen are due to sign the agreement at the UN headquarters at 1430 GMT. The full text has not been made public.
Washington says the deal will prevent China and Russia from establishing military bases or making sensitive investments in Greenland without US approval.
Trump has repeatedly called for US control of Greenland since returning to the White House in January 2025, creating tensions with NATO ally Denmark. Frederiksen said the agreement strengthens Arctic security and benefits NATO and Europe.
