Trump To Host Xi As US-China Trade Tensions Continue

Washington: US President Donald Trump is set to host Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House on September 24, with a prominent reception planned for the Chinese leader. The meeting takes place as Washington and Beijing strive to manage tensions between the world’s two largest economies.

Trade and tariffs are likely to dominate the discussions, as both parties continue to navigate the aftermath of Trump’s worldwide tariff policies. Talks might also include agricultural buying and certain export restrictions. Artificial intelligence is another critical matter, though experts believe significant consensus on AI regulation is not expected at this point.

Iran-related tensions are also expected to surface during the meeting, particularly around U.S. sanctions aimed at countries dealing with Tehran. Taiwan remains a sensitive issue, since Beijing insists the self-governing island belongs to it. The two countries still disagree strongly on this issue.

Even with all the preparations, big breakthroughs are still looking unlikely. Experts cited by AFP say Trump and Xi may focus more on maintaining their current pause and managing tensions rather than pushing for big new agreements. They might schedule another meeting between the two leaders.

The White House is arranging a military welcome ceremony and a lush state dinner for Xi, alongside the completion of a new granite helicopter pad on the South Lawn. Trump and Xi are also anticipated to meet once more at the APEC forum in Shenzhen in November, with Trump expected to extend an invitation to Xi for the G20 summit in Miami in December.
