A brighter smile may be trending on TikTok, but dentists are warning that viral homemade t e e t h -w h i t e n i n g re c i p e s could cause lasting damage. Mixtures using lemon, salt, baking soda and activated charcoal are increasingly promoted online as easy alternatives to professional whitening. Dentist Dr Marwa Al Ekri, however, warned people against trying such remedies without professional advice. She said patients have visited dental clinics after using these methods and developed worn or weakened teeth, damaged enamel, sensitivity, gum irritation, inflammation and gum recession. Dr Al Ekri said the idea that “natural” ingredients are automatically safe is misleading.

Lemon and vinegar are acidic and repeated exposure can erode enamel, making teeth more sensitive and vulnerable. Baking soda and salt can also wear or scratch enamel when used incorrectly or too often. She also warned against using hydrogen peroxide without professional guidance. High concentrations or prolonged exposure can burn and irritate the gums and mouth, causing severe sensitivity. Instead, she recommended professionally supervised whitening or dentist-approved home trays and whitening gels selected according to individual needs.

Anyone experiencing sensitivity or gum irritation after a home treatment should stop using it and consult a dentist. “Invest in your teeth the right way, take care of them, and they will stay with you for life,” Dr Al Ekri said.
