Simply No Alternative’ to Two-State Solution: Guterres

New York: UN Secretary-General António Guterres continues to insist that a two-state solution is the only feasible path to long-term peace and security between Israel and Palestine, stating that there is 'simply no alternative.'

Guterres spoke at a high-level discussion on the margins of the UN General Assembly, calling for the establishment of two separate, sovereign, and democratic states – Israel and Palestine, to coexist in peace and security.

Guterres cautioned that settlement construction, demolitions, evictions, displacement, and land seizures in the occupied Palestinian territory are undermining the circumstances required for a viable Palestinian state to exist. He warned that continuing settlement activity could jeopardise the possibility of a cohesive Palestinian state.

He asked states to go beyond words of support and implement tangible ‘policies, decisions, and actions,’ such as opposing annexation, supporting Palestinian institutions, and promoting a genuine political process toward Palestinian self-determination.

Guterres also stated that Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, should maintain political, economic, and geographical integration under a viable Palestinian authority.

He stated that the suggested two-state framework should be built on pre-1967 boundaries, with safe and recognized borders and Jerusalem serving as the capital of both states.
