US President Donald Trump has said he is demanding compensation from Iran for people he says were killed or seriously wounded in conflicts involving the country.

In a statement, Trump said Iranian representatives had sought compensation for damage suffered during the recent five-month military conflict, but argued that the issue had not been raised during previous negotiations or meetings.

Trump said he had instructed his representatives to include his compensation demand in any future negotiations with Iran. He cited deaths and injuries linked to conflicts involving Iranian forces and groups, as well as other incidents over the past several decades.

The remarks add another contentious issue to any potential future US-Iran negotiations, with compensation now being raised alongside broader disputes between the two countries.
