Kohat: A suicide bomber attacked a police headquarters in northwestern Pakistan on Friday, killing at least 31 people, including 16 police personnel, and injuring more than 100 others, a senior police official said Saturday..

The attackers drove an explosives-laden vehicle into the Old Police Lines complex in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where police officers, their families and other worshippers had gathered at a mosque for Friday prayers.

The blast damaged the compound and triggered a gun battle as armed attackers stormed the facility. Security forces launched an operation to clear the complex and confront the militants.

Police said all seven attackers were killed during the attack and subsequent gun battle, while fighting continued inside the Special Branch section of the police complex. More than 100 people were injured in the assault.

The attack comes as militant violence continues to affect Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a province bordering Afghanistan. Authorities have yet to provide a final account of the attackers involved.
