Johannesburg: South African police have found the body of a ninth woman in Ekurhuleni, located east of Johannesburg, further fuelling concerns that a same person may be at work amid a string of murders. Over the past two months, bodies have been discovered in multiple communities within the municipality.
The most recent victim, thought to be approximately 30 years old, was discovered by a bystander close to a construction site early Thursday. Police stated she had what looked like a stab wound to her side and a cut throat. Her identity remains undetermined, as forensic investigators work to establish the official cause of death.
The first eight victims were discovered in locations such as Kempton Park, Pomona, Clayville, Olifantsfontein, Rhodesfield, KwaThema, and Dawn Park. Several women were discovered naked or partially dressed, with indications of assault on some, leading authorities to investigate whether the incidents are interconnected.
Nevertheless, authorities have not verified that a serial killer is to blame. Investigators are weighing several possibilities such as different perpetrators or copycat attacks and are analysing evidence, timelines, locations, and victim profiles.
