Muharraq Municipality Warns Shops Over Unlicensed Use of Public Space
Businesses must obtain prior approval before using public spaces outside their approved property boundaries.
Muharraq Municipality has reminded commercial establishments that any space outside a shop does not automatically belong to the business or mean it can be used without approval.
The municipality said areas outside the approved boundaries of a shop may form part of the public road, making their use for private purposes subject to prior licensing and regulations under the Public Roads Occupation Law and its executive regulations.
Public road occupation includes more than blocking roads. It can involve displaying goods outside a shop, installing display platforms or equipment, putting up awnings or covered structures, or placing any items that occupy part of a public pavement or road, even when traffic can continue to pass.
The municipality clarified that the use of outdoor spaces is not completely prohibited. Businesses can apply for an official public road occupation licence, allowing them to use designated areas in accordance with specific conditions and requirements.
Shop owners must identify the type of occupation, complete the licensing requirements and comply with the approved type, area, duration and conditions throughout the permitted period.
Muharraq Municipality urged shop owners and traders to verify their approved property boundaries and the status of any external space before using it. Businesses were also encouraged to apply through the available licensing service to avoid municipal violations.
