Isa Town Set for First Central Market

The Southern Municipal Council has backed a proposal to establish Isa Town’s first central market since the area opened in 1968.

The proposal, submitted by second constituency member Mubarak Faraj, identifies the former Lebanese commercial complex as the site. The building is owned by the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture and already has electricity, water, gas and air-conditioning facilities, Faraj said.

The proposed market would include stalls for vegetables, fish, poultry, meat and dates, with space for around 60 stalls and utility links to tenancy contracts.

Faraj said the market could serve residents of Isa Town and nearby areas including Nuwaidrat and Salmabad.

“The market should remain under government management,” Faraj said, arguing that it could provide regulated premises for vendors, support employment and generate municipal revenue through stall rents.

The council also approved a request by residents of a Zallaq housing project to merge unused plots behind their homes with their properties.

Ninth constituency member Hamad Al Zaabi said the vacant land was collecting rubbish and attracting unwanted gatherings.

“The land is serving no purpose,” Al Zaabi said.

The council also backed a proposal to electronically link tenancy contracts with electricity and water accounts. Al Zaabi said the system could automatically address utility supply when rental contracts expire.

“This frees us from the courts and complaints,” he said.

Two other proposals on electricity and water billing and housing-project water tanks were postponed pending officials’ attendance.

Councillor Mohammed Darraj withdrew from the session, citing delays and the absence of relevant authorities.
