Baghdad: Iraq handed over restricted airspace above the country's western region to civilian authorities, lifting restrictions on military operations imposed in 2016, according to the Transport Ministry on Friday.

According to the ministry, all previously established airspace zones spanning northern and southern Iraq have been handed over to the entity in charge of airports and air navigation.

The action will allow public aviation to use previously designated zones, signalling a significant shift after nearly a decade of military-imposed limitations.

The move is intended to increase the amount of airspace available for commercial aircraft while transferring management of these zones to Iraq's civil aviation authorities.
