Arriving in Washington for high-stakes talks with President Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping calls for cooperation, stressing that the US and China need to be stable partners.
Washington DC: Chinese President Xi Jinping urged cooperation with the United States, stating that the two nations should act as ‘partners rather than rivals’.
His remarks were published by state news agency Xinhua ahead of closely watched talks in Washington with President Donald Trump.
Arriving in the US capital where he shook hands on a red carpet, Xi noted that Chinese and American interests are deeply intertwined.
The high-stakes discussions are expected to tackle thorny topics, including trade, technological competition, particularly in artificial intelligence, and Beijing's diplomatic and economic support for Tehran.
Expressing eagerness for in-depth exchanges on major bilateral and global issues, Xi emphasised the need to chart a correct path for major powers.
He stressed working toward a stable relationship characterised by cooperation as the mainstay, bounded competition, manageable differences, and peaceful prospects.
In a nod to his counterpart's political slogan, Xi suggested that the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the goal of making America great again can fully go hand in hand.
He expressed full confidence that the visit would yield fruitful results, enhance citizen well-being, and bring new hope for world peace.
