Al Makes History with the first live-assisted brain tumour surgery, marking a major milestone in advanced neurosurgery and medical innovation.
London: A 48 years old British man, Rhys Hibbert, has become the world's first person to have brain tumour surgery with live artificial intelligence help.
Rhys Hibbert of Bedfordshire had the landmark procedure at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London. Surgeons removed an 11mm non-cancerous growth from his pituitary gland, which threatened his vision.
During the procedure, an Al system evaluated live video from the surgery in real time, detecting and colour- coding microscopic blood veins, nerves, and other important brain structures. This allowed doctors to avoid locations where even a millimetre of inaccuracy could have resulted in significant harm, such as blindness or stroke.
The procedure, performed in May 2026, marked the first time the technology had been utilised on a live patient after being designed and tested as a research tool. Hibbert's eyesight was saved, and he is now back to work.
