6-Year-Old Sets Rubik’s Cube World Record
Chinese girl solves the puzzle in just over four seconds
A six-year-old Chinese girl has set a new female world record for solving a 3x3 Rubik’s Cube, completing the puzzle in just over four seconds, according to Chinese state media.
China Central Television (CCTV) reported on Monday that Lian Yunyi broke the female world record twice this month at two official competitions recognised by the World Cube Association (WCA), held in Wuhan and Guangzhou.
She recorded an average time of 4.52 seconds at one competition and 4.27 seconds at the other, based on five attempts at each event.
CCTV described Lian, who is from Chengdu, as the first female speedcuber to record an average time below 4.5 seconds.
Video footage released by CCTV showed the young girl rapidly turning the Rubik’s Cube before placing it on the table, clapping her hands and raising her fist in celebration after completing the puzzle.
In an interview with local media, Lian’s mother, Lin Yangxi, said her daughter was first introduced to the Rubik’s Cube after joining a training course as a young child, alongside other activities including dance and music lessons.
She said solving the Rubik’s Cube was an excellent activity for developing a child’s overall abilities, which encouraged her to support her daughter’s interest in the puzzle.
Lian has now mastered more than 1,300 algorithms used to solve the Rubik’s Cube and trains for two to three hours every day, her mother said.
