Seoul: North Korea lauded the opening of its first road bridge with Russia as a ‘new symbol’ of friendship, highlighting the two countries' growing strategic alliance.

The one-kilometre, two-lane bridge spans the Tumen River, connecting Rason in North Korea and Khasan in Russia. It will improve automobile and pedestrian mobility and is projected to increase trade, tourism, and overall economic cooperation.

The bridge will supplement current rail and air connections and is expected to first transport freight, with passenger travel planned later. Its opening comes as Pyongyang and Moscow's military and economic connections have grown significantly since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

North Korean Premier Pak Thae Song hailed the project as a historic development that will reenergise bilateral cooperation, while Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin praised it as a new emblem of friendship.
