Kathmandu: Rescue personnel in Nepal are facing a ‘unprecedented’ difficulty as they seek for hundreds of hydropower workers believed to be trapped beneath tunnels following the devastating glacial and mountain fall on August 26.
Arnold Dix, an Australian tunnel-rescue expert, stated that many complex rescue operations are taking place concurrently, each with its own set of perils and uncertainty. At least 1,385 people have perished, while more than 5,500 are still missing in Nepal and Tibet.
Three workers have been rescued from deep inside flooded hydroelectric tunnels in recent days, sparking hopes that others may still be located. Rescue teams from Nepal, India, China, and South Korea are working with international specialists as the operation enters its 13th day.
