Kathmandu: The dead toll from severe flash floods and landslides in Nepal has raised to 469, Nepal Police reported today. More than 1,400 people are still missing after a calamity devastated the Nepal-Tibet border region earlier this week.

Rescue crews are still searching for survivors amid the muck and rubble, while helicopters and heavy machinery are being deployed to get to the impacted areas. The tragedy wrecked homes, roads, and bridges, cutting off several communities.

Meanwhile, Nepal and China have issued new flood warnings as water levels rise in lakes caused by debris and mudslides. Authorities are concerned that a Himalayan barrier lake may rupture, causing another deadly surge downstream.

China has also paused rescue operations at the Tibet disaster epicentre because of the risk of further flooding.
