Riga: NATO fighter aircraft destroyed a foreign drone that entered Latvian airspace early Friday, August 14, amid rising tensions on the alliance's eastern border.

Two Italian Eurofighter jets operating from Lithuania and two Turkish F-16s based in Estonia collapsed after the drone was detected. One of Italy's Eurofighters intercepted and destroyed it over the Balvi municipality in northeastern Latvia, around 35 kilometres from the Russian border.

Latvian authorities believe the drone entered the nation as a result of Russian electronic warfare, but the specific origin has yet to be determined. Officials are examining a wooded area for debris, and NATO has stated that an inquiry is being conducted in collaboration with Latvia.

An air warning for many Latvian districts is finally removed. NATO stated that its forces are prepared to respond to potential threats to alliance airspace.
