Asian woman was sentenced to five years and fined BD100,000

The First High Criminal Court of Appeal will deliver its judgment on September 28 in the appeal of an Asian woman convicted of laundering BD22,250 obtained from an earlier embezzlement-related offence.

She was previously sentenced to five years in prison and fined BD100,000. The lower court also ordered the confiscation of BD22,250 and the return of BD775.081 to the victim.

Financial investigations found that the defendant transferred part of the proceeds from her sponsor’s account to her own account before sending money to an account in her home country.

She also used some of the funds to repay a loan, transfer money to her husband and make local and international purchases.

The original offence involved the unauthorised use of an electronic signature and obtaining money through false data entered into an information technology system.
