TOKYO: Japan will test hypersonic missiles and other projectiles on Australian soil under a new agreement aimed at deepening military ties between the two nations.
Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles and Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi announced the enhanced strategic framework in Canberra.
The decade-long arrangement provides Japan's Self-Defense Forces with access to Australian missile ranges for standoff missile trials. Australian officials highlighted that offering strategic depth through range access strengthens regional security alignment alongside key allies.
In addition to missile testing, the ministers unveiled Project Boobook, a joint defence venture featuring a co-developed laser system. Named after a native Australian owl, the technology enhances threat detection across land and littoral combat platforms.
This pact builds on growing security cooperation, including Australia’s recent $6-billion acquisition of Japanese stealth frigates. Both countries continue to align their military capabilities amid evolving regional dynamics in the Indo-Pacific.
