Italian Airport Reopens as Etna Volcanic Activity Subsides

Catania: Italy’s Catania Airport in Sicily has reopened as Mount Etna's volcanic activity decreased, permitting flight operations to restart after several days of disruption from volcanic ash.

The eruption forced the airport to cease operations during one of Italy's busiest holiday seasons, resulting in hundreds of cancelled or diverted flights and thousands of affected passengers. Volcanic ash can cause catastrophic damage to aircraft engines and other equipment.

Mount Etna, Europe's largest active volcano, has been erupting since August 6, sending ash across sections of the Mediterranean, including Malta. Authorities continue to monitor the volcano and airspace.
