Washington: According to a Pentagon inspector general assessment, the US military is suffering a munitions shortage as a result of its battle with Iran, which drastically depleted weapon inventories.
According to the research, the fight showed flaws in the US defence industrial base, with production capacity insufficient to quickly replace any of the weapons deployed during the war. The United States spent an estimated $33.4 billion through June 30, including around $22.3 billion on bombs.
The report warned that restocking certain modern weapons could take a long time, raising questions about the military's ability to maintain another major combat while also supporting current missions and partners.
The conflict harmed US military facilities in the Middle East, with Iranian attacks hampering infrastructure, logistics, and resupply operations.
The findings are likely to put additional pressure on the Pentagon and the military industry to increase weapon manufacturing and enhance US ammo stocks.
