East Java: A wildfire at Indonesia’s Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park has spread towards residential areas, prompting the closure of the popular tourist destination.

The fire has already destroyed more than 700 football fields of land. Forest rangers and soldiers are battling the blaze with the help of two water-bombing helicopters, fire trucks and drones fitted with sprinklers.

Authorities said cloud-seeding efforts to bring rain are not possible for several days because there are not enough clouds over the area.

Indonesia is facing an intense dry season this year, with the weather agency warning of a higher risk of drought and wildfires linked partly to El Nino.

More than 107,000 hectares of land had already burned across Indonesia in the first half of this year : more than twice the area affected by wildfires in all of 2023.
