Kathmandu: Families of hundreds of pilgrims and other travellers missing after a devastating mudslide in the Tibet-Nepal border region are demanding more information from Chinese authorities about the search and identification efforts.
The disaster, triggered by a glacier collapse on August 26, killed more than 1,300 people across Nepal and Tibet and left thousands missing. In Tibet, Chinese authorities have reported dozens of deaths and more than 500 people missing.
Families of foreign nationals say they have struggled to get clear information about their relatives and have received limited updates on rescue operations and the identification of bodies. Some governments have begun collecting DNA samples from relatives to help identify victims.
Foreign diplomats have also raised concerns about the lack of access to information from the Chinese side, including material that could help identify missing people.
China has said it has provided timely information and is willing to work with other countries as search and recovery operations continue.
