Bahrain and the UK called for an emergency Security Council meeting over Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and threats to regional maritime security.

The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting at the request of Bahrain and the United Kingdom following the military escalation in Yemen and attacks by the Houthi militias targeting Saudi Arabia and maritime security in the region. Saudi Arabia and Yemen also participated in the meeting, which addressed missile attacks on Saudi Arabia on September 7 and the escalating military situation in Yemen following the Houthis’ seizure of the Red Sea coastal city of Mokha, near the Bab Al Mandab Strait.

Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jamal Fares Al Rowaie, strongly condemned the Houthi attacks targeting civilian sites in Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran. He said the attacks represented a serious violation of international law, international humanitarian law and the UN Charter. He also warned that continued Houthi attacks against maritime security and freedom of navigation pose a direct threat to regional and international peace and security.

Ambassador Al Rowaie also delivered a statement on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council, as Bahrain chairs the council’s 46th session. The GCC strongly condemned the Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia and reaffirmed its full solidarity with the Kingdom in confronting threats to its security, sovereignty and territorial integrity. The statement also condemned the continued targeting of maritime security and threats to freedom of navigation. Bahrain warned against attempts by the Houthis to circumvent the UN sanctions regime, stressing the need for the international community to address the growing risks posed by the escalation and protect regional stability and vital maritime routes.
