Kinshasa, DR Congo: More than 3,000 people have now died in an ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to the latest official figures from authorities in Kinshasa.

The severe epidemic has infected more than 6,000 people, making it officially the deadliest Ebola outbreak ever recorded in the country's history.

The official declaration of the epidemic was issued in mid-May, after which the dangerous virus began spreading across multiple communities.

Official reporting confirms that the transmission of the disease is currently focused in the eastern and northeastern parts of the country.

Health response efforts continue to navigate complex conditions on the ground, as the affected eastern and northeastern regions remain conflict-hit areas.
