Death Toll From South China Floods Rises to 159

Beijing: The death toll from last month's devastating floods in southern China has increased to 159, with ten people still missing, Chinese official media said today.

The floods were caused by Typhoon Maysak, which brought torrential rains and severe flooding to Guangxi in July. Earlier sources put the regional death toll at 39.

According to state broadcaster CCTV, the disaster affected around 1.65 million people in Nanning and Guigang provinces. Both areas have begun the post-disaster recovery and reconstruction phase.

The updated death toll was published roughly six weeks after the floods, but officials did not explain why the data had taken so long to be revised. A dam break at Guangxi's Liulan Reservoir had previously resulted in 26 deaths.
