Paris: BMJ Public Health has retracted a disputed article on excess mortality during the COVID-19 epidemic, following considerable criticism of its methodology and interpretation.
The study, published in 2024, looked at excess mortality in Western countries and found that deaths became unusually high even after the pandemic's peak. Although the study did not directly demonstrate that COVID-19 vaccinations caused the deaths, it was extensively cited by anti-vaccine groups as evidence to back up their assertions against immunisation.
The BMJ Group stated that the paper was removed due to ‘misinformation on causes of death and limited original work conducted by the authors.’ Researchers also questioned how the study estimated excess deaths and whether it sufficiently accounted for factors like COVID infections and other causes of death.
The denial does not imply that excess mortality during the epidemic did not exist. Many nations have reported excess mortality, however establishing the causes requires taking into consideration a variety of circumstances, including COVID-19 infections, healthcare interruption, and other health issues.
The study's withdrawal follows two years of disagreement about its conclusions and how they were used in public discussions about COVID-19 vaccinations.
