Bogota: Colombia's government says 20 guerrillas were killed in a military bombing raid targeting armed groups in the southern region of Guaviare, as the country steps up its crackdown on cocaine-trafficking rebels.

The operation is part of a larger military offensive launched by President Abelardo de la Espriella against armed organisations operating in isolated areas of the country. The operation also resulted in the capture of five individuals and the rescue of two youngsters.

However, the crackdown has raised concerns after four juveniles were allegedly killed in recent military attacks. The victims were two 15 year olds and two 16 year olds, according to a Colombian forensic official. At least 26 persons have died in recent military operations.

The murders have heightened concerns about Colombia's use of airstrikes against rebel groups, particularly given the recruitment and participation of youngsters in armed organisations.
