London: UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has taken himself out of the race to succeed FIFA President Gianni Infantino, stating that he is not interested in obtaining the top job at the world football governing organization.
Čeferin cautioned Infantino against running for re-election in March 2027, citing potential challenges. Infantino has come under increasing scrutiny following his now-defunct plan to integrate private funding into FIFA event operations, including the World Cup.
Čeferin, one of Infantino's greatest detractors, believes his decision not to run will improve his credibility as he opposes the FIFA president's policies. UEFA has also been among those advocating for more responsibility within FIFA.
The FIFA presidential election is slated for March 2027 in Morocco, and Infantino is expected to compete for another term. A possible rival has yet to be officially confirmed.
