Damascus: A Syrian court sentenced ex-President Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia for crimes committed during the country's nearly fourteen years of civil conflict.

The court found Assad guilty of crimes including planned murder, torture, unjust detention, and crimes against humanity. The verdict represents the former president's first conviction.

The historic trial also resulted in the death sentences for Assad's brother Maher al-Assad and former security official Atef Najib. Assad was overthrown in December 2024 and is currently in Russia.

The conviction is viewed as a significant step forward in Syria's efforts to bring former regime officials accountable for violations committed under Assad's tenure.
