The Public Prosecution has ordered the pretrial detention of a suspect pending investigation after videos allegedly showing him making sectarian statements circulated on social media.

According to the head of the Northern Governorate Prosecution, the videos contained statements considered insulting and denigrating Islamic figures and symbols, with authorities saying the content could contribute to sectarian tensionand undermine social peace and cohesion.

The case was referred to the Public Prosecution by the Cybercrime Unit of the General Directorate of Combating Corruption, Economic and Electronic Security.

Prosecutors questioned the suspect and confronted him with the videos and their content before ordering his detention as investigations continue.

The Public Prosecution stressed that freedom of opinion, expression and religious practice are rights guaranteed under Bahraini law, but said these rights do not extend to insulting religious figures or inciting sectarian strife.

Authorities said they remain committed to addressing statements or actions that could threaten social peace and coexistence.
