The captain of an Air India flight that suddenly lost around 300 feet in altitude during a Phuket-to-Delhi journey has tested positive for marijuana in a confirmatory drug test, according to sources cited by Indian media.

Air India flight AI2379, an Airbus A320, experienced the sudden altitude drop over Odisha on August 4. The incident left several passengers and crew members injured and has been classified as a serious aviation incident.

Both pilots underwent mandatory post-flight drug screening. The captain’s initial test flagged a concern and the sample was subsequently sent to a designated laboratory for confirmation.

The confirmatory test has reportedly also returned positive for marijuana. Both pilots have been removed from flying duties while authorities investigate the incident and assess the circumstances surrounding the test result.

The incident is being investigated by India’s aviation authorities, with the drug-test findings adding a new dimension to the probe.
