Artificial intelligence is moving beyond answering questions and generating content. The next big shift is AI agents — systems designed to understand a goal, plan multiple steps and complete tasks with less human intervention.

Unlike traditional chatbots, AI agents can potentially interact with software, search for information, analyse data, write code and carry out repetitive workflows. For example, instead of asking an AI to draft an email and then sending it yourself, an AI agent could prepare the message, organise supporting information and help complete the task.

This technology could transform workplaces by handling routine digital jobs and allowing people to focus on decisions that require creativity and judgment.

However, greater independence also creates new challenges. Giving AI access to files, accounts and business systems raises concerns about privacy, cybersecurity and accountability.

The AI race is therefore shifting from “Who can build the smartest chatbot?” to “Who can build the most capable digital assistant?”
