Dentist says replacement is about protecting the tooth, not improving the smile

A dental crown can look perfectly fine while problems develop beneath it, according to dentist Dr Zainab Al Haddad.

She said patients sometimes visit the clinic with old crowns that appear normal, only for examination to reveal that the crown no longer fits properly against the gum.

Gaps can develop where the crown meets the tooth, creating spaces where bacteria can collect. In some cases, decay may also develop underneath the crown.

These problems may not cause obvious symptoms, allowing them to progress unnoticed for years.

Dr Al Haddad said such issues can eventually affect both the tooth and the surrounding gum. She stressed that replacing a crown is therefore not simply about improving its appearance, but about protecting oral health.

For people who have had a crown for years without a dental check-up, she said an important point remains: looking fine does not necessarily mean being fine.
