Harare: At least 15 people were killed and 27 remain missing after an overcrowded ferry capsized on Zimbabwe’s Lake Kariba, authorities said on Wednesday.

The ferry overturned on Tuesday after encountering strong waves while travelling between the northern town of Kariba and nearby islands and fishing camps.

The vessel was carrying 114 adults and five crew members, along with some children, despite being designed to carry 90 people.

Rescue teams have so far saved 77 passengers and recovered 15 bodies, according to Zimbabwe’s Civil Protection Unit. A specialised aquatic rescue team has also been brought in by air to help search for those still missing.

Lake Kariba, which lies along the Zimbabwe-Zambia border, is the world’s largest man-made lake by volume.
