San: At least 10 soldiers were killed on Sunday when Al-Qaeda-linked militants attacked a military base in San, central Mali, according to security and local sources.

The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, claimed responsibility for the attack and said its fighters had taken control of the army barracks in the Segou region.

Heavy fighting broke out in the early hours, with residents reporting explosions and sustained gunfire. Mali’s military said its forces launched a strong response and brought the situation under control.

The attack comes amid a worsening security crisis in Mali, where armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda and Daesh have carried out frequent attacks for more than a decade.

JNIM and the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) have stepped up attacks in recent months. On 18 July, at least 50 soldiers were killed when a military convoy was attacked in northern Mali.

Mali has been under military rule since coups in 2020 and 2021, with the junta promising to restore security despite continued violence across the country.
